Depending on the unit selected, Learners can develop knowledge in areas such as management and leadership practice, developing individuals and teams, performance management, stakeholder relationships, project management, change, operational planning, risk, quality improvement and other areas of organisational management.
The CMI Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership is the shortest qualification within the CMI Level 5 Management and Leadership suite. To achieve the Award, Learners must complete at least one unit to a minimum of 40 Total Qualification Time (TQT) hours, with a minimum of 14 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and 4 credits.
The Award provides flexibility by allowing Learners to select an appropriate unit from the available Level 5 Management and Leadership framework. The selected unit can be aligned with the Learner’s professional development needs and management responsibilities. However, CMI’s rules of combination must be followed when selecting units.
Successful completion of the Award can provide progression within the CMI Level 5 Management and Leadership suite. Learners may subsequently progress from an Award to a CMI Level 5 Certificate or Diploma by completing the additional units and qualification requirements. Further professional development can also include progression to CMI Level 6 Management and Leadership qualifications.
The CMI Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership can be offered to Learners from 16 years of age. CMI does not specify formal academic entry requirements for the qualification. However, the CMI Centre must ensure that each Learner has sufficient capability to undertake the learning and assessment requirements successfully.

Important Unit Selection Rules
- The Award requires a minimum of one unit.
- The selected unit must provide at least 40 TQT hours and 4 credits.
- Unit 608 – Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability cannot be selected for the Level 5 Award; CMI states that it may only be selected as part of the Level 5 Diploma or Extended Diploma.
- Unit 502 cannot be selected with Units 503, 505, 511 or 526.
- Unit 526 cannot be selected with Units 501 or 502.
Note: Because the Award requires only one unit, the actual study unit will depend on the programme selected by the CMI Centre and the Learner’s professional development needs.

1. Progress to the CMI Level 5 Certificate
After completing the Award, Learners can progress to the CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership by completing additional units and meeting the Certificate requirements. The CMI qualification suite specifically allows Learners to progress from an Award and top up to a Certificate or Diploma.
2. Progress to the CMI Level 5 Diploma
Learners can continue their Level 5 studies and progress towards the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership, subject to completing the required units, credits and TQT. The Diploma requires a minimum of six units, 37 credits and 370 TQT hours.
3. Progress to CMI Level 6
Following completion of the relevant Level 5 qualification and professional development, Learners may progress to CMI Level 6 Qualifications in Management and Leadership.
4. Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr)
Successful Learners completing CMI Level 5 qualifications in Management and Leadership may be eligible for Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr), subject to retaining CMI Membership.
5. Chartered Manager (CMgr) Pathway
The CMI syllabus states that Learners completing the Level 5 Diploma may be eligible for Chartered Manager (CMgr) where they can provide evidence of a minimum of three years’ management and leadership experience. Award Learners would therefore need to progress through the relevant CMI qualification route and meet the applicable requirements.
